The juke joint was not just a venue. It was an institution. In the decades following Reconstruction, across the Deep South and Mississippi Delta, juke joints became the cultural and social center of Black community life — spaces of music, food, dancing, games, storytelling, and connection that existed entirely outside the reach of segregation and white economic control. The blues, R&B, rock and roll, hip-hop, and most of American popular music trace their lineage directly to what happened in these spaces. Tales from The Juke exists to honor that lineage and make it present again.
